Nestled in the picturesque island of Gozo, Tal Mixta Cave is a captivating natural attraction that overlooks the scenic Ramla Bay and its surroundings. It offers visitors a glimpse into both the geological wonders and historical significance of the region.
Once a Bronze Age dwelling turned into an observation spot during the times of the Knights of St. John and now an Insta-famous spot – Tal Mixta Cave has much to offer to curious explorers.
I ended up visiting this cave three times during my time on Gozo – once right after arriving in Gozo and then twice at the very end of my trip. And while the sky was grey and cloud-covered during my first visit, it was obvious right away that it is one of the most stunning spots on the island.
Therefore, you should make your way to this cave, even if you only have one day in Gozo. Especially as it is currently the only vantage point of Ramla Bay, as the famous Calypso Cave on the opposite side of the bay is currently closed for safety reasons.
About Tal Mixta Cave
Tal Mixta Cave, also known as ‘L-Għar Tal Mixta’ in Maltese, is a natural marvel close to the charming village of Nadur, Gozo. Its name ‘Mixta’ derives from the Maltese ‘mxett’ which means ‘wintering’, which hints at the fact the cave was a troglodytic habitat.
Nowadays, it is an insta-famous sunset spot, so people do not merely flock there in winter. In fact, you can expect it to be much less crowded during the winter months. But do not worry: If you stick around for a while, you will likely have the cave for yourself at one point. At least, if you visit it during the day, as most people sadly just snap a few photos and leave without actually enjoying the view.
Do not expect people to leave as quickly during sunset tho. It is the only time of the day when people will stick around to observe the hopefully mesmerizing display of colors. Albeight at one point, once most of the light has faded, few will stay to see the sun fully sink beyond the horizon.
As you slowly walk down the man-made stone staircase with uneven steps into the cave, the cave opening gradually comes into view. It is a breathtaking sight, but please do not forget to watch where you are going. Walk down to the flat area and then marvel at the fantastic view in front of you.
As you stand in the cave, you will quickly notice that there are also bird nests above you. Sit down and listen to the chirping sound of the baby birds and observe as the birds squeeze into tiny crevices to enter the nests.
Note: Just know, that the baby birds sometimes sadly fall down from the cave ceiling. Move them to a safer spot on the side of the cave if they are alright after the fall, so no one steps on them.
The Best Time to Visit it
The cave is open year-round, but the best time of the year for a visit is the shoulder seasons, as the weather is good, but there are fewer people visiting the now popular Tal Mixta Cave.
However, it is also perfectly fine to visit it in summer. Just bring enough water as it can be incredibly hot and keep in mind that you will very likely have to wait a while until you can take a photo. Try visiting it in the morning during the high season.
The best to visit Tal Mixta Cave is on a sunny day when there are few clouds in the sky. If you want to see Ramla Bay at its best, you should visit Tal Mixta cave between 12 PM and 2 PM on a sunny day. During this time in direct sunlight and the colors of the water and the beach are the brightest.
However, it is also an incredible sunset spot – likely the best in Gozo. That is if the sky is clear and not super hazy and cloudy.
I ended up visiting Tal Mixta Cave three times before I finally managed to have favorable weather conditions in the evening hours.
Look up when the sun sets the day you plan to visit Tal Mixta Cave and then arrive at least 30 minutes earlier.
It is a place worth visiting several times. Therefore, you should not hesitate to visit Tal Mixta Cave if it is cloudy – if you end up having the chance to return on a sunnier day, you will still love it and it will feel like a new experience. And if you sadly cannot return there, the cloudy visit means you did not miss out on one of the best things to do in Gozo.
Costs
Thankfully, there is no entry fee for Tal Mixta Cave. Therefore, you only have to pay for your transport to the cave in the form of a bus ticket or a rental car alongside fuel.
Rules
Tal Mixta Cave is on private property and the owners allow visitors to access it – therefore, it is only right that we respect them by following the rules they have implemented. These rules protect you, the cave, and other visitors, so please abide by them.
It is prohibited to fly drones, party, play loud music, have barbecues, or camp in the cave. You are also not allowed to trespass on fenced-off areas outside the cave.
Respecting these rules helps ensure that access to this beautiful spot in Gozo will remain open to everyone, so please do your part. In addition to that, you should be mindful of the cliff edge once you are inside the cave.
Of course, the usual rules of eco-friendly traveling apply: Do not leave any trash behind. Do not take anything you find in the cave. And do not etch your name into anything.
warning: Scorpions (Euscropius Sicanus) that are native to Malta can sometimes be found in this cave. While their venom is mild, it is best to watch where you sit down and step – especially if you are wearing sandals. We ended up finding one that was struck to our shoes after visiting the cave
Tal Mixta Cave History
Tal Mixta Cave has witnessed various events throughout the ages. In the Bronze Age, the cave was inhabited and Bronze Age pottery has been found in and around the cave.
After a pirate attack in 1733 (July 7) during which pirates captures a Gozitan family of 8 after landing at Ramla Bay, the Knights of St. John turned it into a strategic vantage point that was used to secure Ramla Bay.
It was part of an entrenchment that also included an underwater wall spanning the entire length of the bay and canons that were placed inside the cave. The opening was closed and the only open areas were those for the canons.

Getting to Tal Mixta Cave
Technically speaking, there are four ways to get to Tal Mixta Cave, whereby only one of them grants you ultimate flexibility while also ensuring that you do not have to walk a lot to get there. But ultimately, the best way to get there depends entirely on what your Gozo itinerary looks like and your preferred mode of transportation.
Driving to Tal Mixta
The most convenient and flexible way to get to Tal Mixta Cave is to drive there. It is located at the end of Triq l-Għassa tal-Maħraġ, a road that is not sealed, but even small cars can handle it as long as you drive slowly.
You can park around 300 meters away from the cave at one of the parking bays just before access to a private property that is closed with a rope. Check out the location of the parking bays by looking up the area using Google Maps in satellite view mode for a better understanding of the parking situation.
From there, you have to walk. Please note that you will be walking on private property. It is allowed to do so, but please respect the owners by following the rules. There are signs & arrows that show you the way to the cave, so it is very easy to find it.
Getting there by Public Transport
If you are coming from Victoria, your best option is to take bus line 302 (Victoria to Ramla). The bus drives through Xewkija and Nadur, before arriving at the closest bus stop ‘Qasab’ after 20 minutes. The bus stop is a 1.8 km walk away from Tal Mixta Cave, but there are no closer options. Keep in mind, that it takes a while to walk there and that the last return to Victoria is at 7:32 PM.
Alternatively, you can also take bus line 301 to Vapur (at Maġarr Harbour) before taking line 322 toward Marsalforn.
If you want to stay longer at Tal Mixta Cave, you have to walk to a different bus stop. ‘Hali’ bus stop is 2.4 km away from the cave, but there is an hourly bus until 10:33 PM.
Hiking there from Ramla Bay
If you want to turn your visit into a hiking trip and want to relax at Ramla Bay before or after seeing Tal Mixta Cave, you can also walk up there from Ramla Bay by following two paths with some steep sections.
Only walk up to the cave from Ramla Bay if there is still daylight. Attempting to walk up or down after sunset would be incredibly dangerous and I do not recommend it. So please do not stick around until after the sun has set if you have to return to Ramla Bay.

In addition to the former three, you can also visit Tal Mixta Cave by joining a tour of Gozo. These tours are ideal if you only have the time for one day in Gozo and do not want to worry about driving or taking public transport.

Please just keep in mind that your time at the cave will be rather limited if you visit it during a group tour. You will not be able to stick around to enjoy the view or wait until you have Tal Mixta Cave for yourself. If you want more flexibility but have the comfort of having a driver, the following private tour is ideal for you:
Private Tour of Gozo (4 hours or full day) – while this tour with a private driver in an air-conditioned vehicle has a recommended itinerary, you can alter it by talking to your driver. Therefore, it is up to you have long you get to stay at Tal Mixta Cave.
Where to stay nearby
Stay in a Traditional Farmhouse in Nadur
I highly recommend ‘Sunny Villa’ as it is an incredibly charming property with a pool and is next to an animal rescue center. The design of the rooms is on point and makes you feel right at home, and the breakfast is amazing.
You can either rent one of the four bedrooms or the entire farmhouse – just know that you likely have to book months in advance if you want the entire house for yourself.
It is only a short drive away from Tal Mixta Cave (9 minutes), and bus line 302 stops a mere 80 meters away from the property.
In addition to that, it is also next to the incredible ‘Mekren Bakery’, which is a must for every foodie visiting Gozo.
If no rooms are available in the Sunny Villa, you should check if there are any rooms in the Moonshine Villa next door.

St. Patrick’s Hotel, Xlendi ($$) — a nice hotel located right at Xlendi Bay that also offers a great sunrise view of the valley behind Xlendi; there is a great restaurant inside the hotel & the staff is very friendly
Ta’ Cenc, Sannat ($$$) — one of Gozo’s two 5-star hotels; a wonderful property with restaurants, a spa & an outdoor pool
