One of the best foods to try at the Frankfurt Christmas Market is hot Apfelwein. Apfelwein translates to ‘apple wine‘, and it is a local drink similar to cider. At the Christmas market, you can find its hot version with Christmas spices. It’s a favorite amongst the locals and a very regional drink you shouldn’t miss.

Open: November 15, 2024 – January 5, 2025

Valkenburg is a city in the South of the Netherlands, near the border with Belgium and the city of Maastricht. The Christmas markets in Valkenburg are in four caves, which makes them unique among the Christmas markets in Europe.

For years marl was removed from quarries in the area, which led to a series of caves with corridors. In November and December, Christmas markets are held in these caves. The Christmas markets can be found at the Fluweelengrot (Velvet cave), the Gemeente grote, Mergelrijk, and the Wilhelmina grot.

Each Christmas market has its own theme. At the Wilhelmina grot, there’s Winter Wonderland, with an underground Christmas market, a cable lift, a toboggan run, and a large, illuminated Christmas tree. Mergelrijk has a 30 meters long Christmas story in miniature on display.

The Gemeente grot is the oldest underground Christmas market in Europe. The largest indoor Christmas event in the Netherlands is in the Fluweelengrot. At all the markets they sell candles and nativity scenes made out of marl. A special thing being sold in Valkenburg.
